" RETURN OF HANUMAN " MOVIE SYNOPSIS:

A worried Lord Hanuman is moved by the plight of Minku who is bullied by his classmates and wants to go to Earth to help him. Hanuman checks on the boy through a computer screen and zooms in to Bajrangpur, to keep a track on the boy very often. He also tells Narad that seeing the same faces up in the sky, main pak chuka hoon. When not following Minku’s life, Hanuman, mischievous to the hilt, zips around the world replacing himself with the Statue of Liberty and throwing Osama Bin Laden and George Bush in a net.

When Hanuman approaches Lord Bramha for permission to visit Earth, Bramha tries to dissuade him and asks Chitragupt, who is busy surfing meneka.com, to show Earth’s escalating crime rate. But Hanuman is adamant and Bramha finally agrees after he signs a `contract’ and agrees to all the conditions. Thus a baby with a tiny tail is born to a Pundit. Maruti, as he is named, is an adorable child who grows inexplicably fast and is forever hungry. He becomes the savior of Minku and his other harassed friends (a nerdy girl, fat boy, clichés galore).

Meanwhile demons, like Rahu and Ketu, who had vanished from Earth to live in Shukragraha, are back. A series of events sets off the `parlay’, where humankind is on the brink of being destroyed by nature’s fury. There’s a neat message towards the end, though not fully explored, of stopping the exploitation of Mother Nature.

MUSIC REVIEW SUNDAY

Innovative titles and themes are in. Otherwise, would one have ever imagined till a few years back that there would be a movie made with a title like Sunday with the film revolving around the life of a girl who had one missing day in her life - Sunday!? Directed by Rohit Shetty, Sunday is an interesting project in the offering since it boasts of an ensemble star cast comprising of actors as diverse as Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irrfan Khan, and Anjana Sukhani. Also, it comes after Zameen and Golmaal, two diverse films by the young film maker. With composers as diverse as Sandeep Chowta, Suroor, Daler Mehndi, Shibani Kashyap, Raghav Sachar and Amar Mohile coming up with a song apiece, Sunday raises quite some hopes as one plays on the film's soundtrack.

It doesn't take beyond a few seconds to get your neck in motion as the beats arrive for 'Missing Sunday'. With Earl Edgar chipping in with his occasional rap-n-reggae, Mahua Kamath (ex-VIVA girl) and Suraj come together in this groovy track by Sandeep Chowta who makes a comeback on Bollywood OST soundtrack years after his 'Laila Laila' in Samay - When Time Strikes. As such the track has a very few lines (written by Farhad Sajid) and it is mainly the composition with long standalone musical pieces in between the lines which makes it a unique experience.
Remix version, which comes next, is polished further, and brings with it a different rhythm, styling, and groove. If the opening version was not just good enough, this one only makes Sunday an album that you may want to go for even if it comprised of only a single - 'Missing Sunday'! An absolute winner, it is only aided further by an innovative music video that makes you catch the number umpteenth number of times as it arrives on the telly!

Put to tune by 'Suroor', 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai' which follows next takes a completely different dimension when compared to the title song and turns out to be an utterly delicious piece of melody to bite on. Written by Kamran Bari who pairs up with Mohammed Ali to even croon the track, a bona fide Pakistani soft track is impossible to resist.

A beautiful number that is instantly catchy and would be loved not just by the followers of Pakistani music but even hardcore Bollywood buffs, 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai' is a sugar coated track which is a superb track that one gets to hear before year end. Kamran Bari is excellent in his rendition as a young man who is realizing the essence of love and is truly enjoying every moment spent in bliss!

For a song like this, one secretly wishes that it remains untouched with no remix angle given to it. This is why, there are apprehensions galore when one starts lending ear to the 'remix version' that does make an appearance in the end. Though it is not bad at all in spite of added beats and pace to the original, one is tempted to go back to the original any time.

With Daler Mehndi's name staring from the credits, it is pretty much expected that there would be a fun outing in the offering. This is exactly the case as 'Loot Liya' comes next. After a groovy track ('Missing Sunday') and a melodious outing ('Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha'), the album gains from the range provided by inclusion of multiple composers as Daler gets into a duet which is reminiscent to the style of 'Dil Mein Baji Guitar', a Pritam composition from Apna Sapna Money Money.

A non-stop track that has Sunidhi Chauhan pairing up with Mehendi (who also writes the song in collaboration with Farhad Sajid) and has 'dhamaal' written all over it, 'Loot Liya' may not qualify as a classic track in the making but does well to keep the pace of the album going due to the fun quotient it promises for the masses.

Composer/singer Shibani Kashyap along with lyricist Virag Mishra had created a rocking 'Zinda Hoon Main' exactly two years back. The team returns to compose yet another dark track 'Kashmakash' that again takes a similar pitch and setting while creating an intriguing feel. A situational track which doesn't make one croon it around loud on the streets but still creates curiosity to know what the film is all about, 'Kashmakash' appears to be the item song choreographed on Esha Deol that may appear around the film's climax as the secrets unfold and hidden skeletons tumble. DJ Suketu's exciting 'remix version' only aids in ensuring retention value for the song.

Now this is a song, which could be a potential chartbuster if treated well! Raghav Sachar, who has his own style of composition while mixing western sounds with Indian feel (as witnessed last year in Kabul Express and some of his private albums), creates 'Manzar'. It picks up heat after a few lines set the pace for things to follow, as has been the composer/singer's style and takes some exciting twists and turns throughout it's near four minute duration. Written by Aditya Dhar, this should be a song to watch out for as one waits to see how the choreographer has treated this high-on-beats number.

Amar Mohile, who has been a regular (quite successfully) in the background music scheme of things, is the man behind composing 'Sunday - Theme'. With a slight oriental feel to it, this theme track is created entirely in English and has Joy (who also writes the song) coming together with Clint for the rendition. A fast paced track that is being heard along with the film's promos ever since they were first aired around three weeks back, 'Sunday Theme' is urban, young, spicy, enthralling and quite entertaining. Watch out for the way 'bhangra beats' is incorporated at places without turning it into an out and out Punjabi outing!

Sunday is the last album to be released in 2007 and ends the year on a happy note after a long draught that has been witnessed due to lack of any notable score. If title song 'Missing Sunday' is a major good enough reason to go for the album, love song 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai', a masala number 'Loot Liya', theme track 'Sunday Theme' along with item numbers 'Kashmaksh' and 'Manzar' only add on many more reasons to rejoice.

Go for this one - you won't be disappointed!

Top-10 soundtracks of 2007

Wish I could get to choose Top-15 albums of the year rather than conventional Top-10; but then one has to live with the constraints! So here we go.

Note: 'Guru' and 'Salaam E Ishq' do not find a place in the list since the soundtracks released in 2006 and had found a mention in 'Best Soundtracks' feature last year.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Music: Pritam)

2007 was clearly Pritam's year. Period. From January to December, across the charts, Pritam has dominated the music scene. Rightly labeled as a 'hit-machine' even by his contemporaries and rivals, Pritam made the entire nation sway to the tune of 'Hare Krishna Hare Raam'. Rest of the album was quite good too but songs like 'Labon Ko', 'Allah Hafiz', 'Sajda' and 'Lets Rock Soniye' got sidelined due to entire focus resting on Akshay's promotional video. Music lovers weren't complaining though!

Partner (Music: Sajid-Wajid)

Re-discovery of 2007 was the composer-jodi of Sajid-Wajid. They came up with the biggest project of their career and result was for everyone to see. They stuck to the formulaic soundtrack that had made many a David Dhawan films successful in the decade gone by. Presence of songs like 'Do You Wanna Partner', 'Dupatta', 'Soni De Nakhre', 'You'Re My Love' and 'Maria Maria' may have been questioned by many who were looking for some unique sound in this part of the century but hardcore music buffs and Salman-Govinda fans were willing listeners!

Dus Kahaniyaan (Music: Gourov Dasgupta, Shafqat Ali Khan, Anand Raaj Anand, Bappa Lahiri)

This was one soundtrack that deserved to go an extra distance but lost out due to non-performance of the film. It was always a risky preposition to have number of songs in a single album knowing very well that except for a song or two (Title song, 'Jaaniye'), most of the tracks would be relegated to a line or two as a part of background score in each of the 10 stories. New composer Gourov Dasgupta dominated the album with Shafqat Ali Khan, Anand Raaj Anand and Bappa Lahiri also pitching in. Gulzar's poetry was an added bonus too, hence making Dus Kahaniyaan one of the most versatile albums of 2007.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy)

The film may have been one of the strangest of 2007 but no one complained when it came to music. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom featured a rocking soundtrack by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy which had an intrinsic Indian feel to it, in spite of high-on-western-orchestra arrangements. Title song featured on Amitabh Bachchan was a clincher though 'Ticket To Hollywood' and the climax medley of 'Jhoom' were popular too. One wishes though that 'Bol Na Halke Halke' should’ve got the kind of recognition it truly deserved.

The Train (Music: Mithoon)

The Train heralded the arrival of a new composer who made his presence felt in a big way with songs like 'Woh Ajnabee', 'Mausam' and 'Beete Lamhein' turning out to be chartbusters. Though Mithoon got into the thick of things last year too with songs from Bas Ek Pal and Anwar becoming popular, it was The Train which announced his arrival loud and clear. Presence of a certain Emraan Hashmi in the film helped too!


Taare Zameen Par (Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy)

A late riser, Taare Zameen Par finally got it's due at just the right time - Thankfully! Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy forgot all about the work they had put in their 'dhin-chaak' soundtracks for the likes of Johnny Gaddaar, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Heyy Babyy, Salaam E Ishq and many more and concentrated on telling stories through a child's point of view. The result is for everyone to see as there no audience who didn’t weep when songs like 'Maa', 'Mera Jahaan' and 'Taare Zameen Par' were heard along with the narrative.

Namastey London (Music: Himesh Reshammiya)

'Himesh Reshammiya in one more project' - and so one thought! But the album turned out to be surprisingly refreshing for the worst of Reshammiya detractors. Along with Javed Akhtar saab, the composer/singer came up with some of his best tunes that were quite un-Reshammiya - a compliment for the team associated with Namastey London. 'Chakna Chakna' may have been purely for the masses but songs like 'Main Jahaan Rahoon', 'Viraaniya' and 'Yehi Hota Pyaar' touched hearts across segments.

Jab We Met (Music: Pritam, Sandesh Shandilya)

To think about it, this soundtrack didn't even have a name till around 3 weeks before it's arrival on stands. A surprise super hit, both when it comes to the movie as well as the music, Jab We Met has made history in the last quarter of 2007. Each and every song from the film has achieved a chartbuster status and while 'Mauja Hi Mauja', 'Nagaada' and 'Yeh Ishq Hai' are the songs blazing strong up North in all celebration events, 'Aao Milo Chalo', 'Tum Se Hi' and 'Aaoge Jab Tum' (Sandesh Shandilya) were for the hearts truly in love. Jab We Met would easily stand as one of the Top-10 soundtracks ever by Pritam!

Om Shanti Om (Music: Vishal-Shekhar)

Vishal-Shekhar were consistent throughout 2007 with music from Cash, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd and Ta Ra Rum Pum gaining good popularity. However, when it came to their positioning in the charts, they got a great thrust with Om Shanti Om making a huge dent on the stands. The album rose to the top position the moment it arrived and ever since then has been registering great sales. Though SRK's six-pack abs made 'Dard-E-Disco' most popular song of the album, it was 'Deewangee Deewangee' which was the best composition of the lot. Vishal-Shekhar were uniquely different from what they had done in the past, as demonstrated though songs like 'Aankhon Mein Teri', 'Dhoom Taana', 'Main Agar Kahoon', 'Jag Soona Soona Lage' and 'Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om', Yes, they all have been hits!

Life In A...Metro (Music: Pritam)

Pritam rules from the top in 2007! He was one composer who took up the challenge to do something different from the routine and combined with film maker Anurag Basu to not just create an entire soundtrack based on rock genre but went ahead and even created a band. Result was astonishing to say the least as lovers of new-age music feasted on 'Alvida', 'In Dino', 'Baatein Kuch Ankahee Si', 'O Meri Jaan' and 'Rishtey'. Cynics may have termed the soundtrack of Life In A...Metro to have sounded same from start to finish but this exactly was the beauty of this Pritam album. It maintained a similar style throughout and still conveyed different emotions through each of the tracks. Truly, the album of the year!

Other notable mentions:

While music of Johnny Gaddaar defied norms, Heyy Babyy stuck to the basics and came up with an entertaining massy soundtrack. Saawariya worked in a major way with the class audience, while 'Aap Kaa Surroor - The Moviee targeted just the opposite side of the fence. Awarapan had a couple of superb tunes too whereas Khoya Khoya Chand succeeded in getting one nostalgic about the era gone by. Number of singles worked too, with ‘Chak De India' [Chak De India] sitting at the top followed by 'It's Rocking' [Kya Love Story Hai], 'Kitni Der Tak' [Delhii Heights] and 'Billo Rani' [Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal].
